"When the energy of compassion and love touches us, healing establishes itself." - Thich Nhat Hanh

Meet Our Team

David M Phelan, Licensed Professional Counselor.

“If we are absolutely grounded in the absolute love of God that protects us from nothing even as it sustains us in all things, then we can face all things with courage and tenderness and touch the hurting places in others and in ourselves with love.”

David M. Phelan, MC, LPC

We all face challenges in life. But we don’t have to face them alone. I am here to help and would consider it an honor to accompany you on your pathway to healing and transformation. My intention is to meet you where you are with warmth, compassion, and a sincere concern for your well-being, and to help you through the process of healing, growth, and discovery. My desire is for you to feel heard, valued, and supported as you recognize that everything you need for the life you want has already been given to you. I want to help you be more aware of your inherent worth and preciousness, as well as help you tap into your inner strength, uncover your truest self, create lasting changes, and cultivate peace and joy in your life.

Hi, I am David Phelan, founder of Transcend Counseling and Wellness. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with a Master of Counseling degree from University of Phoenix (1995). The desire to serve others began while working on the leadership team of my high school youth group. In that service, I recognized my life could make an impact in the lives of others.  And, for the past 30 years I have pursued that desire in churches, schools, hospitals, community mental health agencies, and in private practice (since 2004).

In the pursuit of helping others, in addition to counseling, I have managed a mental health training program that mentored professionals working in prevention services, written a book to increase access to technology-assisted therapy ( Biofeedback: An Introduction for Consumers), developed online mental health resources to serve those who might have difficulty with in-person therapy (www.tpd15.com), and provided a variety of lectures, workshops and programs on mental health and spirituality. I see value in creating opportunities for growth, healing and transformation in a lot of different ways and bringing my learning from these opportunities back into counseling sessions with my clients.

Throughout my career, I have seen first hand that real and lasting change is most likely to occur when we care for the whole person ~ Mind, Body & Spirit, and that growth and transformation of individuals and families impacts the entire community. In my own journey, I have come to know the importance of being kinder and more compassionate towards myself, as well as those around me, and I believe as we pursue this work it is possible for us to have an impact on generations to come. Having come to this realization myself, I had the desire to work with other therapists who have had similar experiences, which led to the founding of Transcend Counseling & Wellness.  Nothing gives me more joy than to be a part of others making real and lasting changes in their own lives and in the lives of those they care about.

When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My wife, Julie, and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary in 2020. We have been blessed with four amazing children and three beautiful grandchildren and a whole tribe in our extended family. And the places where we have learned, worshiped and worked over the years have blessed us with a wonderful community of friends.

In my quiet time, I enjoy reading and writing, meditating and being in relationship with God. I have a love for learning and I also like playing the guitar, singing, finding creative uses for technology, and, in not-so-quiet times, participating in my son’s love of basketball. I have been blessed and want to share that blessing with others.

It really would be an honor to meet with you and walk with you on your journey of healing and transformation. If you are ready to get started, click the link below.

Contracted Providers

Our contracted providers are independent therapists who use our offices for the convenience of the clients we serve.  Each offers a unique set of skills to be able to help even more clients. Our owner, David Phelan, MC, LPC provides supervision to, and works closely with, these providers to ensure excellent quality of care for our clients.

Regina McManigell, MA, LAC

Can I guide you on your path? With a Mind, Body, and Spirit awareness, I seek to help you grow mentally, physically, and spiritually in the direction you most deeply desire. I enjoy guiding adolescents, adults, and couples towards developing resilience, controlling emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, and setting and achieving your life goals through art, writing, and talk therapies.

We can engage in the following therapies and modalities, depending on your preferences: Cognitive Behavior Therapy, which is primarily a talk therapy, Expressive Arts, which employs drawing, painting, drama, poetry, and story-telling, or Mindfulness, which promotes focus and clarity of mind, body, and spirit in the here and now.

Even though art is the most "spoken" language of children, we can all benefit from playing with color, shapes, sounds, movement, language, and story-telling. I invite you to make an appointment with me today to play with your favorite medium, while also improving your mental health and progressing toward your life goals. Of course, children are welcome!

Collaborating Providers

Each individual is unique; therefore, each path for healing and transformation differs. For services in addition to those offered by our staff, we work closely with our trusted collaborating providers, each skilled in different therapies and areas of expertise, to provide the best care for our clients. For your convenience, each provider is located near us or is available through online services.

Amanda Hawkins, Float Specialist.

Amanda Hawkins, Float Specialist

Amanda started her holistic wellness journey in 2012 after dealing with unsuccessful back surgery, chronic debilitating pain and fatigue, and severe depression. When conventional treatments and medicine failed her, she began her search for affordable, drug-free pain relief and whole body-mind rejuvenation. After two years of trying different treatments and modalities, she found the answer in flotation therapy. Now she is passionate about helping others on their physical, emotional, and mental healing journeys. Amanda believes the ability for our bodies to heal already exists within each person and wants to help them discover how to tap into that potential healing power. Sometimes the slightest shift can cause a ripple effect that will change your life; she is living proof of that.

Amanda’s goal is to become an integral part of the holistic community in Arizona. She desires to help people dealing with physical or mental health issues and envisions working with them to reduce or eliminate their pain, anxiety, or depression. She is passionate about empowering those suffering from physical or psychological distress to see that there is more to life than just pain. Being intimately familiar with chronic pain and depression, she knows firsthand that these conditions can drown out all the joy and happiness in life and make it difficult to see that life is still worth living. Flotation therapy can be a powerful tool to help alleviate or eliminate chronic conditions and promote mind and body healing.
